Sylvia Medina is a dedicated community advocate, regularly volunteering and working in partnership with local community-based organizations. She firmly believes that residents’ voices must be prioritized in determining what is needed to improve their neighborhoods. In 2018, Sylvia was among a group of residents in southwest Fresno who participated in the Community Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Training (CPBST) Planning Committee led by UC Berkeley and California Walks to make safety improvements along California Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Building upon the momentum which began with California Walks, Sylvia, and three other community residents founded Our Voice Project, a group that continues to advocate for positive community improvements. Sylvia serves on her local school site council and was invited to participate in the Fresno D.R.I.V.E. Initiative (Developing the Region’s Inclusive and Vibrant Economy). This 10-year Community Investment Plan was drafted with input from a 300-person steering committee representing over 150 organizations in the Greater Fresno Region. The initiative aims to determine how to achieve real economic mobility while fostering an inclusive, vibrant, and sustainable economy. Sylvia works for Generation Changers, whose mission is to empower people in our generation to control their life and claim their rights.
