We believe that those who have been harmed by oppressive systems and those most impacted by planning and political decisions should direct the development and implementation of solutions, and we actively connect to and engage communities as leaders of change who drive decision-making processes in genuine ways that are based on their own expertise.

We co-empower, co-create, and co-operate with communities.

Our Mission

California Walks makes communities across our state more walkable. We champion safe, inclusive, and enjoyable streets and public spaces for all Californians. Our Vision

Every community in California is walkable. All Californians, of any race, identity, age, or ability, can walk or roll with confidence, dignity, and security on safe, joyful streets and public spaces that connect them to work, play, and community.

Our Commitment to
Black Lives Matter

Planada CPBST_ Rivera028.jpg

California Walks is committed to work in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement to defund the police, and demand an end to a multi-faceted war against the Black community. For years, Black scholars and transportation advocates have been addressing racism and white supremacy in planning, yet the active transportation field continues to be myopic in how to create safe streets and public spaces for everyone. The costs of that collective inaction have caused the loss of Black life, homes, neighborhoods, and entire communities…

Our History

California has always been a hotbed of activism for safer streets and more just and inclusive communities. Some of the first dedicated walk advocacy organizations emerged in the Golden State, including WALKSacramento, Walk San Francisco, and Circulate San Diego (formerly Walk San Diego). With the support of the California Department of Public Health, these local groups identified the need for and helped give rise to California Walks.
