DONATE to make San Jose’s streets safer to walk and roll
Invest in your community!
As we approach the end of another year, we continue to lose loved ones to traffic violence on San Jose streets. In 2021, we continued to track crashes on San Jose streets and the reports are alarming. From January 2021 to October 2021, there have been 48 total traffic related fatalities with 28 pedestrians and bicyclists continuing to share the brunt of those crashes, that’s over half (55%) of the crashes here on our city streets involving people walking or using a bicycle. Walk San Jose continues to work with our community leaders in the city and county to bring an end to this preventable traffic violence.
This giving season, we are asking for your support to continue uplifting & amplifying community voices. Let’s continue developing better coordinated pedestrian safety efforts in neighborhoods across San Jose.
Since being launched in 2017, Walk San Jose has worked to strengthen relationships between community residents, community-based organizations, and the City and County to bring safety improvements and programs in support of walking and biking.
Here are our 2021 Highlights!
Advocated for the City of San Jose to fund pedestrian safety projects like Walk Safe San Jose.
Piloted a Spare the Air Youth workshop series to engage youth as leaders in Climate and Transportation solutions in San Jose.
Supported and provided technical assistance for the City of San Jose’s Downtown Transportation Plan.
Tracked crashes in the city to support data driven decision making
Provided Media commentary through local channels for local issues like San Jose Media and CreaTV to support Bay Area Families for Safe Streets.
Produced a Crash Resource Guide to support crash victims along their healing journey.
Performed two Walk Audits with two communities to tap in to local expertise from residents on solutions and gaps in traffic safety design in their neighborhoods.
We continue to plan the next year focused on our community, consider giving to Walk San Jose so we can:
Continue bringing community voices like our Vietnamese community elders who would like San Jose to have “a future where everyone feels safe and comfortable moving under their own power.”
Strengthen community efforts like those in the Orchard School District near Berryessa, who have taken steps like hosting a Community Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety Training to develop, better coordinate and boost community safety for pedestrians and bicycle users.
Develop and implement walking and biking assessments, safety trainings and continued advocacy for safety improvements for San Jose’s most vulnerable communities
Connect community members who primarily speak languages other than english to much needed services & decision making for community change. We’ll be releasing our Post-crash resource guide in Spanish and Vietnamese soon to bring healing & care to fill this gap for our whole community.
Link up our communities to fun and exciting celebrations of safe healthy streets, so other schools can enjoy School Streets closed to car traffic like Viva Calle SJ
Your ongoing support continues our work to create safe, just, and inclusive streets and public spaces.
